Why Welding Traceability Is Becoming a Manufacturing Requirement

For decades, welding quality control often followed a relatively simple pattern:
Weld → Inspect → Accept or Repair
If the finished weld passed inspection, the production process was generally considered successful.

Traditional quality control places significant emphasis on final inspection. This remains essential because the finished weld must ultimately satisfy the applicable acceptance criteria.
But final inspection has an inherent limitation. It tells manufacturers what happened to the finished product, but may not fully explain why it happened.
When a production batch contains several weld quality issues, manufacturers may need to investigate the welding procedure, operator, consumable, equipment, joint preparation, and production conditions.

04 Why Welding Consumable Traceability Matters
One of the often-overlooked elements of welding traceability is the welding consumable.
Manufacturers may think of welding wire, electrodes, or flux simply as production materials. In controlled welding production, however, consumables can also represent an important part of the quality record.
Which consumable was used on this weld?
In more demanding applications, the question may become:
Which production lot did that consumable come from?
This distinction becomes particularly valuable when a quality investigation needs to determine which production batches may have been affected.
05 WPS Traceability: Connecting Production to a Controlled Process
Consumable traceability is only one part of the system. A second critical connection is the relationship between the weld and the applicable welding procedure.
A production record should be able to answer:
Which welding procedure was used to produce this weld?
This becomes increasingly important when manufacturers operate multiple procedures for different materials, thickness ranges, joint configurations, welding processes, positions, consumables, and shielding gases.

The true value of traceability is often revealed when something goes wrong.
Imagine that a customer reports a weld quality issue several weeks after delivery.
Without effective traceability, the manufacturer may need to investigate a much larger group of products simply because the affected population cannot be clearly identified.
